For more
than forty years, Jim Thakoordin has been at the forefront of the
struggle for racial, social and economic justice for Black, Asian,
minority ethnic and working class people in Britain.
As one of Britain’s first Black trade union officers, Councillor and
Parliamentary candidate Jim has consistently challenged racism and
inequality within the Trade Union movement, the Labour Party, national
institutions and society as a whole.

Memories of the 20th Century reflects upon the lives of a small number
of ordinary and extraordinary people, mainly from the Caribbean, Africa and
South Asia, who have contributed in their own ways towards race and
community relations. The stories of their lives – from childhood to the
present – make fascinating reading, especially for young people who have
lived in a world profoundly different from that of their parents and
grandparents.
Part One comprises the personal recollections of people living in
Luton, in Bedfordshire. They recall memories of their childhood in their
countries of origin, their adult life in Britain and their plans and
thoughts for the future.
Part Two is a collection of brief biographies of famous Black and
Asian people such as Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, Muhammad Ali, Martin Luther
King Jr. and Malcolm X, who have inspired and influenced millions of people
around the world.
Memories of the 20th Century will benefit the general reader as well as
educators, social workers, community organisations, local authorities and
other institutions, because it serves as an essential record of the past
which, in turn, helps us to understand the present and plan for the future. |
